We will read our chosen book for our Literature Circle groups and track our reading.

As you will be meeting to discuss these books, it is important for you to track your thinking throughout the book as you read. You have a tool for this: Literature Group Bookmarks! Today we begin a new routine: Look at your bookmark and choose a prompt under the headings  “Thinking about how you read” and “Thinking about what you read”. On paper or post-it notes, write about what you think or what you noticed as you read today.  You will use these notes when you meet with your groups to discuss your books.

This week, we met with schools via the Google Hangout. We discussed many ideas about what the most important recommendations for reconciliation are. One question keeps popping up during the discussions: What does reconciliation mean?! Today we will create our class definition and think about some examples and post it in the room.

What it looks like to me.

Finally, we need to use our inquiry planner to help us choose a topic, find an article to read and annotate, and finally, make a research note.

Permission forms for D2L and Minecraft needed!

We are going to start by getting our Literature circles set up. View the chart posted in the room. Some of you will be working in this room, while others will be going to RM122 to work in your groups.

Sign out your books.

Divide the book into three sections in your groups. You will be asked to read the section and make notes according to the Lit Circle Book Marks. You will need to be prepared to meet with your group on the following dates:

  • March 31st – Lit Meeting #1 – Need reader’s notes for first section of book
  • April 14th Lit Meeting #2 – Need reader’s notes for second section of books
  • April 28th – Lit Meeting #3 – Need reader’s notes for third section of books

Preview the text. On paper, write a response:

Reader Response #1

  • What do you think the book is about?
  • Why did you choose this book? What interests you about it?
  • What might you find challenging about this book?

For the second part of today’s class we will work on our book reviews.

  1. Peer Edit each other’s review.
  2. Revise your review.
  3. Post it to Goodreads.

PERMISSION FORMS FOR D2L AND MINECRAFT NEEDED!!!!

D2L Link

Google Hangout #2 Focus

Choose the ‘most important’ Call to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Report of Canada and share with the rest of the group.

1. What is the recommendation?

2. What are some examples of that recommendation in action?

3. Why is this the most important recommendation to focus on to reach reconciliation?

Prompts to help us ask questions to other classes:

  • what did you mean by… ?

  • can you explain more about …. ?

  • I’m not sure what …. means. Could you explain more about that?

  • why do you think …. ?

IF you decide not to join the conversation on camera, please join it off camera in D2L. Simply log into D2L and once on the HOME screen, click on the chat icon (seen below between the HOME button and the BADGE button).

Remember to practice your digital citizenship skills. It’s ok if we disagree; in fact, we often learn the most from people who don’t think the same way about a topic or issue as we do. If we keep an open mind and listen intently, we may discover value in other’s perspectives. Be honest. Be respectful. Be fair.

You will choose a novel as a group.

You will go to #craftreconciliation Goodreads group and post a pre-reading prediction.

Reflection:

  1. Tell your Google Hangout Story.
  2. What book did you choose? Who is in your group? Have you been in a literature circle or study before?
