Your independent novel for 15 mins. In the short stories we are reading, you have been asked to notice: 

• what motivates a character and why
• what figurative devices (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, synecdoche, and onomatopoeia) the author uses and why
• the author’s characterization of the different characters (STEAL) and what this reveals about the theme.
• what literary devices an author uses and why

While you read your novel, be on the lookout for the same elements and devices. Use the reading log in your Reading Tools Section of your notebook to make notes as you go.
