ABUSE OF POWER

Read Self-selected Novels

Evidence of Learning Document–Make a copy and add it to your ENG3C folder. Share your copy of the document with me via the Assignment Submission page. Begin to work on completing the document at home or in homeroom. You will have classtime to work on it from June 4 – 8 (when it is due). If you plan on being away that week or if you need to complete many items, then working on the document ahead of time will be necessary. The evidence of learning document represents 70% of the course mark.

Learning Goal
I am learning to
Identify the elements of a variety of texts
Use evidence to support my ideas;
Apply reading strategies so we can make meaning from a text;
Read different forms of texts.

Reading: “Powder”

Before you read, let’s discuss the prompt at the top of the page. Share a time when you have had to travel in wintery conditions.

As you read, pause at the points in the story that are indicated and predict what you think might happen.

After you read, take a few moments to write your thoughts in your notebook for the prompt below and share with those people at your table:

Did you correctly predict the outcome for either situation mentioned in a) or b)? What surprised you about the father and the outcome of the story?

We will be working to identify and write a theme statement for this story. I will model this process:

  1. Identify a topic that the story discussed
  2. Frame your theme statement using the phrase “The author believes that…” to explain what the author is saying about your topic
  3. Remove “The author believes that” and you have a theme statement.
  4. Find evidence in the text that supports your statement

Themes cannot be vague like “Family is important”

Together we will create a list of topics covered in the story “Powder” and post them.

The following activity will help us practice writing theme statements and finding evidence:

  1. In pairs, choose two topics and write two theme statements. Decide on your best theme. Write it on a separate piece of paper. Crumple it and throw.
  2. When you get another ball, read the theme statement and below write evidence from the text that supports the theme.
  3. Crumple and throw; add evidence to second theme.
  4. Give paper back to owners; review evidence; make revisions or additions

I will collect these and we will use them tomorrow!

Putting it all together!

Learning Goals
By the end of this activity, I will be able to:
Write a draft of my research report using a template as a tool to format my work;
Provide feedback on a peer’s draft using established criteria;
Use feedback from a peer on my draft to improve the quality of my writing.

Today, you will assemble your report and have it peer edited. First, let’s review some research reports using our rubric to ensure that we know what all the components are.

Next, let’s review how to set up our References page in APA format.

INTRODUCTIONS & CONCLUSIONS

Learning Goals:
I am learning to
Select the appropriate elements or features that will engage the audience and communicate your message clearly;
Use diction and voice to engage a specific audience and purpose;
Apply the writing process.

WHEW! We are almost at the research report finish line! Today, we will focus on writing the introduction and conclusion of our reports. And we will consider our level of language or diction in our writing. Tomorrow, we will assemble our writing into the report format modeled for us in Unit 3 and complete a peer edit.

Does the introduction

1.Tell the reader the topic
2. Inform the reader about your perspective or focus (thesis)
3. Arouse the reader’s curiosity so that he or she will want to read about your topic
How? (i.e. ask a question, tell an anecdote, describe a scene related to your topic, offer a statistic or quotation).

Does the conclusion

1. Summarize your subtopics, leaving out specific examples
2. Restate the main focus/thesis of the paper with different words
3. Make a “so what” statement, suggesting why this topic is important

Diction

The choice of words or phrases in speech or writing; the particular words chosen to express an idea.

We will review a handout on diction together. You may find it useful tomorrow when you are revising.
