Today, we will continue with our regular reading routine. Read, make notes, and track your thinking.

Next, we will look at the work we need to do to draft our research reports (Research Lesson #3).

Creating a Thesis

You have completed most of your research.  Now you must review your findings, decide on a thesis, and develop a working outline.

A thesis is like a formula: TOPIC + OPINION + REASONS = THESIS.   It has to be formal so you can’t use “I think”.   One way to write a thesis for a report is to answer you focus question from the Research Report Planner in one sentence.

Model Thesis:

Focus Question: How can having equal access to technology support the reconciliation process?

Thesis:  First Nations youth need to have equal access to technology because this access can contribute to their well-being.

Thesis #2:  First Nations youth need to have equal access to technology because this access can contribute to equal education opportunities.

1. Look at all of your notes and identify the big ideas
2. Use the big ideas to create a working outline; show model
3. Create a working thesis; show model and annotate sample thesis
4. Students organize their notes; create outline, and write thesis statements x 3
