April 2, 2017

Week of April 3 – 7, 2017

We are learning how to uncover bias and perspective in texts.

We are learning to purposefully listen to gather important ideas that shape our thinking.

We are learning to express our meaning clearly

By the end of today’s class, you need to have

a) a personal definition for the concept of  “stereotype” and a negative stereotype in Canada and why it’s a problem;

b)  a trait that you think all Canadians should aim to have;

c) at least one possible inquiry question

Let’s begin by thinking about questioning. 15min

Next, read and contribute to the Collaborative Analysis VoiceThread. 20mins

 VoiceThread Collaborative Analysis

  1. Choose one slide
  2. Consider the prompt / questions
  3. Read/View/listen to the content
  4. Contribute your thoughts to the slide
  5. Comment on another student’s thinking on that slide

Finally, from this work and previous reading in the course answer the following question in preparation for tomorrow’s GHO in your notebook/digital document: (25m)

  1. Define stereotype including a negative stereotype of Canada and/or Canadians
  2. Explain why it’s a problem
  3. What is a character trait that all Canadians should have?
  4. Write one inquiry question (remember your brainstorming from Thursday/Friday)
  5. Assess your question. Does it meet the following criteria?

 An invitation to think (not recall, summarize, or detail). You can’t find the answer through a simple web search.

 Requires support and justification, not just an answer.

 Open-ended; typically there is no final, correct answer.

 Arises from genuine curiosity and confusion about the world.

 Makes you think about something in a way you never considered before.

 Invites both deep thinking and deep feelings. Asks you to think ethically (what is right and wrong).

 Leads to more good questions.

For example, one of my questions is “How will all Canadians benefit by Canada becoming a good global citizen?”

Sample proposed inquiry questions

→  If you didn’t live in Canada, would you want to?

→  How is multiculturalism working to help Canadians develop a collective identity?

→  What role do stereotypes play in defining who we are as a country?

→  How are Canadians defined by their geography?

Post your question to the Dotstorming  page (5m)

Complete your Listening in a GHO page (10)

GHO Today!!

Have Listening in a GHO page out.

Devices for Backchannel

Once the GHO is over,

  1. Post your question to the Dotstorming page and you can vote if you want. There will another form that will decide the questions on Thursday.
  2. Complete your Independent reading Assessment Revisions.

Independent Reading Assessment: How to answer a test question.

As a senior student, every time you answer a question when the instructions ask for paragraph format and evidence, it needs to look a lot like this answer. You had five questions to answer. You need to have five answers like this one.

Also, you must proofread your work. You should no longer be making the types of errors you see below:

Use the Personal Proofreading Checklist to ensure that you catch all these minor errors.

Revise your independent novel reading assessment answers and re-submit to the Assignment Submission page. Due Friday, March 31, 2017.

Wednesday

Read your novel for 20 minutes.

**Creating and voting on inquiry questions**

PROPOSE inquiry questions that you would like to investigate within the broader theme of “What does it mean to be a great Canadian?” and to Dotstorming.

VOTE: Students get 3 votes each. At the end, we will take the most popular, well-written inquiry questions and break up into groups to research and investigate these questions.

TOMORROW: A link to a survey will be posted in the D2L community so that students may each choose the inquiry question they would like to work on.

Sample proposed inquiry questions

→  If you didn’t live in Canada, would you want to?

→  How is multiculturalism working to help Canadians develop a collective identity?

Thursday- Day 1

Taking Stock of where we are

There are lots of tools to help you stay on track in this course. We are really starting to connect with other students in the province, we are getting ready to conduct our own research, and we are making connections in the literature that we are reading. We do all of these things all the time; weaving them together to make connections between these three areas of exploration and then draw some conclusions near the end of the course when you create a product that ties into our big question:

What does being a great Canadian look like?
