Critical Analysis

I am learning to

make interpretations from reading, ask critical questions, uncover perspectives, and engage in; conversations to form conclusions;
use evidence to support my ideas;
look for connections between my research and themes in novels I read.

use evidence to support my ideas in writing
use a variety of organizational tools and strategies to plan for writing.

Today, you will begin class by working with your literature circle novels. Just as we need to collect evidence to support our ideas about our research question, we need to gather evidence from our novels. Complete the following two graphic organizers to help you think about your text.

Character

Character Motivation means what is driving the character to pursue his/her goal? What does the character want and how will he/she get it?

Theme

The theme of a book is a universal idea or message that stretches through an entire story. A theme may show up in a pattern (such as recurring examples of beauty in simplicity) or a theme may come through as the result of a buildup (tragedy of war). It is often a lesson that we learn about life or people.

In the second half of today’s class, you will continue working on your research report. Today, we will look at a writing tool called EssayJack.
